Homer Electric Association Coal-Fired Power Plant:

The Homer Electric Association and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) signed a Project Development Agreement in November 2006 that will lead to the restart of the defunct AIDEA-owned Healy Coal Plant, a 50-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Healy, Alaska, near the Usibelli coal mine, just outside Denali National Park.  The Healy plant has sat idle since its construction in the 1990’s, largely because the “clean” components of its “clean coal” technology failed to work.  With its energy supply contract with Chugach Electric Association expiring in 2014, HEA is moving ahead with re-starting the Healy plant by 2009/10.

Status:   Litigation between the local electrical cooperative and AIDEA has stalled HEA’s acquisition plans, but HEA management continues to believe the legal issues will clear-up in time for a 2009/10 start-up. See http://www.homerelectric.com/Current%20News/HCCP.htm

Applicant:       Homer Electric Association, Alaska Industrial Development & Export Authority (see www.aidea.org/HealyCleanCoalProjectPage.html).
