Cook Inlet
Water Quality Laboratory
One of the greatest challenges
to citizen-based water quality monitoring efforts has been the
high cost for professional laboratory services. In 2004, Cook
Inletkeeper established the Cook Inlet Community-Based Water
Quality Laboratory, the first citizen-based water quality
laboratory in Alaska.
Goal: Expand the ability of
scientists and citizens to monitor the Cook Inlet watershed by
providing cost-effective analytical services and support.
The Cook Inlet
Community-Based Water Quality Laboratory provides both
citizens and scientists with the resources necessary to
effectively monitor and protect the Cook Inlet watershed.
Inletkeeper has equipped the lab to perform sensitive
monitoring, conduct follow-up analyses, and respond to pollution
and storm events. The lab also serves as a training facility
and workspace for volunteers participating in Inletkeeper’s
Citizens’ Environmental Monitoring Program.
Overall, the lab presents a
tremendous opportunity to grow and improve water quality
monitoring in Cook Inlet. For more information on laboratory
services, contact Edan Badajos, Laboratory Manager at
